ICYMI: Sen. Cruz Talks Job Creation and American Leadership in Houston and Beaumont

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) visited with space industry leaders in Houston from the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership (BAHEP) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Sen. Cruz discussed the importance of protecting and expanding job growth for Texans and establishing consistency in U.S. space programs to ensure that America and the State of Texas remain at the forefront of human space exploration.

Following a tour of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Sen. Cruz met with officials at the Port of Beaumont, where he highlighted the integral economic and national security role the Port plays in Southeast Texas and the U.S. As the world’s busiest military port, the Port of Beaumont is critical to the nation’s defense and preparedness and directly supports nearly 4,000 jobs for Texans.

It was a two-stage mission for Senator Ted Cruz. First he met with more than a dozen industry leaders to talk about public/private partnerships and told the group space exploration is important to him and he hopes to see NASA expand its heavenly reach. That reach includes adding certainty to a space program that suffers when there is uncertainty and lengthening the lifespan of the International Space Station to 2028…But after his round table with business leaders he met with Johnson Space Center Director and astronaut Ellen Ochoa. She hosted a tour for the senator and his daughters through an International Space Station mock-up as they talked short and long term plans for human space flight.

Sen. Ted Cruz held his daughter in the air, simulating weightlessness in the International Space Station, during a visit to the Johnson Space Center with his daughters Monday morning. But the trip to NASA was serious. He was there to talk with leaders in space exploration about the challenges of growing their businesses in Texas. He said he wanted to find a way to create jobs and grow aerospace companies here.

Houston Public Media: Senator Says Continued NASA Funding Is Crucial to Local Economy

Cruz told members of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership that he hopes Congress can reauthorize funding for NASA before the end of the current session. The Houston lawmaker is Chairman of the Senate Science and Space Subcommittee. He says he’d like to schedule hearings next month. “In my view space exploration is a critical priority,” says Cruz. “And it is a priority that I would like to see elevated.” The last time the Senate passed a NASA authorization bill was in 2010. The House has passed additional measures in the years since but the Senate hasn’t taken action.
