Sen. Cruz Applauds Bipartisan Passage of Sanctions on North Korea, Russia, and Iran
Bill includes Cruz-introduced legislation mandating State Department report on designating North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today praised the passage of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act by both the House and the Senate:
“The passage of sanctions on North Korea, Russia, and Iran sends a clear message to our foes that the United States will hold them accountable for their harmful and destabilizing behavior,” Sen. Cruz said. “I am especially pleased that this bill requires the State Department to determine whether North Korea should be designated as a state sponsor of terrorism, incorporating the operative language that I introduced in S. 672. It was a mistake for North Korea to be removed from the list of state sponsors nine years ago, and the rogue regime in Pyongyang has only grown more hostile toward America and our allies, more engaged in illicit proliferation around the world, and more committed to destabilizing the Asia-Pacific region ever since.
“I’m also glad that this bill sanctions Iran and Russia. Specifically, it targets Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for its involvement in international terrorism and for shepherding the regime’s ballistic missile program, and Iran’s non-nuclear activities which continue to make the Tehran regime among the most dangerous in the world. It holds Russia accountable for its hostile actions in Syria, invading and illegally annexing Crimea, engaging in cyber-attacks, and destabilizing activities around the world, while reducing the ability of Vladimir Putin and his regime to opportunistically deprive American energy companies of prospective business opportunities.”
