Sen. Cruz Issues Statement in Response to Secretary Pompeo’s Iran Strategy
‘I look forward to working with the administration and my Congressional colleagues to increase the pressure on Iran, including by passing crushing additional sanctions targeting the regime’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today issued the following statement in response to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech on the United States’ strategy towards Iran following the recent Iran deal exit.
“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo laid out a comprehensive strategy on Iran that would both advance America's national security and meet the Constitutional requirement for the Senate's advice and consent on treaties. The Obama Iran deal accomplished neither. The requirements Secretary Pompeo spelled out for a new nuclear agreement are the minimum that should ever have been considered for a deal, especially ending uranium enrichment activity, halting ballistic missile development, closing down heavy water reactors, ensuring inspector access to all sites, releasing American hostages, and ending support for terror groups like Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, who target Americans and our allies. And any such nuclear deal should never have a sunset date. Secretary Pompeo is right that this should be accomplished through a treaty, ratified by the Senate.
“I look forward to working with the administration and my Congressional colleagues to increase the pressure on Iran, including by passing crushing additional sanctions targeting the regime, as the United States begins to repair the catastrophic damage done by the Obama Iran deal and roll back the virulent terrorism of the Ayotollahs.”
