Democrats: Abandoning Democracy
The Democrats are galloping to the far, far Left, and they are leaving the American people behind.
After the confirmation hearing for Judge Amy Coney Barrett this week, it's clear Democrats are ABANDONING democracy and the Bill of Rights. Instead, they're EMBRACING the notion of "philosopher kings and queens" turning the Supreme Court into a super-legislature where judges decree their desired policy outcomes.
As Sen. Cruz noted, Senate Democrats have surrendered, accepting that Judge Barrett will soon be confirmed as Justice Barrett. Instead, Democrats are desperately trying to take the focus away from Judge Barrett's impeccable credentials and record in an effort to cast aspersions on the process surrounding her nomination.
Joe Biden has gone so far as to claim that Senate Republicans are packing the Court saying, "Look, the only Court-packing is going on right now. It's going on with the Republicans packing the Court now. [...] It's not constitutional what they're doing."
As Sen. Cruz said at the hearing this week, "what utter nonsense."
Biden's claims were so obviously incorrect that even liberal fact-checkers at CNN and Politifact rated them as "False."
In criticizing the confirmation process for Judge Barrett, Democrats are attempting to undermine the independence of the Court, and establish a predicate for their signaled move to abolish the filibuster and pack the Supreme Court with judicial activists. Democrats are seeking to turn the Supreme Court into an unelected super-legislature, a clear abuse of power and an attack on our democracy.
As Sen. Cruz noted this week:
"It's hard to think of a less democratic notion than unelected philosopher-kings, with life tenure, decreeing rules for 330 million Americans. That is not in fact the Court's job. The Court's job is to decide cases according to the law and to leave policymaking to the elected legislators."
Once upon a time, Democrats would have agreed with Sen. Cruz:
- Then-Senator Joe Biden (D-Del.) in 1983: "It was a bonehead idea. It was a terrible, terrible mistake to make. And it put in question, if for an entire decade, the independence of the most-significant body ... in this country, the Supreme Court of the United States of America."
- Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) in 2017: "The Judiciary Committee once stood against a court-packing scheme that would have eroded judicial independence. That was a proud moment."
- Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) in 2018: "Seventy-five years ago, we went through this, And I think the Congress was correct in stopping this popular president named Franklin Roosevelt from that idea."
- Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) in 2018: "We have a long tradition of nine jurists, and we should be very sober before we start tinkering with things like that."
But not anymore.
BOTTOM LINE: In their gallop to the far, far Left, Democrats have made the political determination that democracy is too complicated. Instead, they want to continue their radical agenda and their assault on the Bill of Rights by packing the Court with liberal activists. The fundamental rights that Americans hold dear, including our Second Amendment rights to bear arms, our right to free speech, our right to religious freedom, and others are on the ballot come Election Day.
