May 20, 2017

Greetings,

Yesterday I met with members of both the Irving-Las Colinas and Tomball Chambers of Commerces and attended a job fair in Dallas hosted by the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative, where I had the honor of visiting with so many wonderful young men and women who were seeking out potential employers. At each event, I discussed my number-one priority, which continues to be economic growth and answered important questions from both job-creators and job-seekers.

Earlier in the week I was fortunate to address the Texas Association of Realtors during their annual fly-in to Washington. There, I was able to talk about ways we can expand economic opportunity in Texas and across the nation as well as the importance of private property rights in our economy.

On Tuesday, I participated in The Atlantic's ‘On the Launchpad: Return to Deep Space' forum, where I discussed the importance of our ongoing efforts to advance America's leadership in space and secure the future of the Johnson Space Center in Houston. I also announced that next week I will chair a hearing examining the 50-year anniversary of the Outer Space Treaty and how it will impact future commercial space opportunities in space.

I also joined Sen. Cornyn on two important issues, including cosponsoring a bill to improve veterans' access to timely care, and a letter we sent to Acting Director Dr. Anne Schuchat at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) requesting information about steps the CDC is taking to implement and develop a strong Zika response plan as summer quickly approaches.

Please read below for an update from this last week.

Sen. Cruz: 'America Should Be the Unquestioned Leader in Space'

Sen. Cruz, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competiveness, this week participated in The Atlantic's On the Launchpad: Return to Deep Space forum. There he discussed his efforts to advance America's leadership in space with Ross Andersen, senior editor for science, technology and health for The Atlantic. Sen. Cruz also announced he will chair a hearing of the Space subcommittee on Tuesday, May 23 titled ‘Reopening the American Frontier: Exploring How the Outer Space Treaty Will Impact American Commerce and Settlement in Space' which will examine the 50-year anniversary of the Outer Space Treaty and how it will impact commercial opportunities in space.

"America should be the unquestioned leader in space," Sen. Cruz said. "That is going to take a bipartisan commitment and leadership coming from Congress. In my view the next major milestone is going to Mars, which we codified in the NASA Authorization Act. It is important to set big, bold goals to unify the scientific community, to unify the exploration efforts. Going to Mars is not going to be easy, but it's worth doing and I think it helps unify and propel space exploration going forward." Read more...

Sen. Cruz Honored to Meet Family of Slain Texas Border Patrol Agent

This week, Sen. Cruz met in his office with the wife, children, and parents of Javier Vega, Jr., a Border Patrol Agent who was murdered by two illegal immigrants in south Texas in 2014. More than two years after this tragedy, in September 2016, Agent Vega's death was finally classified as being in the line of duty. Sen. Cruz contributed to that effort with a letter to Jeh Johnson, who was then the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. As part of National Police Week, Agent Vega's family is visiting Washington D.C., where his heroism is being recognized in various ceremonies and events.

"As Scripture says, there is no greater love than when a man lays down his life for others," Sen. Cruz said. "Agent Javier Vega is a sterling example of this, as are the many other fallen law enforcement officers being remembered this week. Agent Vega loved his family, he loved Texas, and he loved the United States, and in the end, he gave his life to protect all of them. He is a genuine hero. It was an absolute honor to meet Agent Vega's wonderful family, and I commend them for their strength in the midst of this tragedy. They are in my prayers." Read more...

Cruz Co-Sponsors Bipartisan Legislation to Improve Veterans' Access to Timely Care

Sen. Cruz this week joined Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) in introducing legislation to improve veterans' access to timely health care. The Veterans' Health Care Integrity Act would ensure the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) complies with its own veteran health care appointment scheduling policies by making annual certification a statutory requirement.

"I am proud to join with Senator Cornyn on a critical piece of legislation that will benefit veterans all across Texas and our nation," said Sen. Cruz. "For far too long, our veterans have been victimized by a bureaucracy that prioritizes the bonuses and awards of senior executives over the needs of their patients. This bill is another key step towards enforcing accountability across the department, while taking steps to ensure that the health and welfare of the brave men and women who sacrificed so much on our behalf will be under the watchful eye of qualified leadership. Decisive action to change the landscape of VA is well past due, and with a supportive administration and the capable leadership of Secretary Shulkin, I am encouraged by the opportunities we have to implement effective, lasting reforms."
