Greetings,
This Independence Day weekend, we reflect on those who bravely fought for our nation's independence. Two hundred forty-one years ago, our Founding Fathers declared our independence; every single day our brave men and women in uniform are working here at home and across the globe to defend our freedoms and our way of life. We owe it to them to ensure they have the tools and training required to carry out their mission, and we have a responsibility to deliver on the promise our nation has made to ensure they receive the care they deserve once their service is complete.
That is why this week, I introduced the VA Information Technology Restructuring Act to modernize the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) IT infrastructure in a manner that will better equip it to ensure our veterans receive the utmost quality health care. This is a critical step to improving the agency's delivery of health care and remedying the long wait times that have compromised the health and safety of veterans who have honorably served our nation.
This week the Senate Armed Services Committee passed the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which included several important victories for Texas military installations. I sponsored 13 amendments and cosponsored six that were successfully adopted into the bill, benefitting both Texas and our military interests abroad and in space, which will now proceed to consideration before the full U.S. Senate. I hope you'll take a moment to read more on what we were able to secure for our great state.
As Ronald Reagan observed, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same." As we celebrate the birth of our nation, let us never forget the tremendous courage and sacrifice of our armed forces who have fought to preserve our God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and our American way of life.
