Greetings,

As Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Space, Science, and Competitiveness, I chaired a hearing on Wednesday examining America’s future exploration of Mars – the focal point of our national space program. I am confident that the first foot that steps on Mars will be American. NASA has made incredible discoveries over the past few decades through the use of scientific robotic missions to Mars, and there are countless more opportunities on the horizon. This week, I was proud to introduce the Space Frontier Act with Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.). Our legislation would support the continued development of a robust commercial space sector and extend our leadership in space by maximizing our utilization and operation of the International Space Station (ISS) through 2030. I am grateful for the broad, bipartisan support we have for the commercial space industry and America’s leadership in space.

On Tuesday, I was honored to speak at the 13th Annual Christians United for Israel (CUFI) Summit. I am thankful that we have a President and an administration who understand that Israel is our friend. At the Summit, I discussed my efforts to strengthen the ironclad alliance between the United States and Israel, including a bipartisan bill I introduced this week called the STOP Using Human Shields Act. America, Israel, and our other allies are engaged in a fight against radical Islamic terrorist organizations, from Hamas and Hezbollah to Al Qaeda and ISIS, who barbarically hide behind innocent civilians. This bill imposes tough sanctions on those who use or facilitate the use of human shields.

This week, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and I introduced the E-FRONTIER Act, which would protect commercial 5G broadband networks from nationalization without authorization from Congress. 5G has tremendous economic potential if driven by the private sector, with the ability to create millions of good paying jobs for hardworking Americans. Just this week, Verizon announced its plans to bring 5G to Houston. This is just one of many examples of what the private sector can accomplish to benefit Texans and all Americans. Our system of free enterprise has helped the United States become the global leader in mobile broadband technology since 2009, and it is best equipped to maintain our leadership moving forward.

As we continue to rebuild from the unprecedented devastation from Hurricane Harvey, we must also take all steps necessary to prepare for the hurricane season ahead.
