This week is Texas Chambers of Commerce Week. Chambers across the Lone Star State play a crucial role as advocates for small businesses, job creators, and the hardworking men and women in their communities. I have been proud to meet with and work alongside these men and women to roll back job-killing federal regulations, lower taxes, and create more economic opportunity and good paying jobs for Texans.

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Throughout my time in the Senate, my top priority has been and continues to be jobs and economic growth. This week, I was honored to receive the National Federation of Independent Business’ Guardian of Small Business award. America’s economy is booming. In Texas, people are investing new capital, opening new facilities, hiring new workers, and raising wages. We’re seeing record low unemployment. That’s the power of getting the government off the backs of job creators, and allowing folks to prosper.

Central Texas is hurting as floodwaters ravaged communities all across the area this week. On Wednesday, I surveyed the storm damage in Burnet and Llano County and received a briefing from local officials in the area. In the last year, Texas has faced a number of powerful storms that have left entire communities devastated. However, I have every confidence that Texans will stand united, and rebuild stronger than ever. One of the great strengths of our state is the number of churches, charities, organizations, and people who have helped in the recovery, relief, and rebuilding process. This weekend, Texans should heed warnings from local officials, know their evacuation route, and avoid high water areas.

Our prayers continue to be with those Americans recovering in Central Texas, and from Hurricanes Matthew and Florence. These devastating natural disasters are a stark reminder of the importance of taking all steps necessary to prepare our homes and families for any future weather event.
