Cruz News: Happy Father's Day

header

June 17, 2017

Greetings,

On Thursday, I had the honor of attending the annual Congressional baseball game along with members of my staff, which was an important moment of bipartisan unity in the wake of the horrific shooting that occurred just a day before at the congressional baseball practice.

We all continue to pray for swift recovery to those who were injured: Majority Whip Steve Scalise, former staffer Matt Mika, Capitol Police Officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey, and our own fellow Texan, Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent for Congressman Roger Williams.

We are particularly mindful of the families who were impacted by the shooting as families gather together for Father's Day weekend. Like many of you, I anticipate spending time with my own dad and family and I ask that you also keep these victims' loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

My father - Rafael Cruz - has always been larger than life, and has always been my hero. After being tortured and imprisoned in Cuba, he fled to the United States to attend the University of Texas at Austin in 1957. He didn't speak any English, and made fifty cents an hour washing dishes. He eventually started his own small business in the oil and gas industry, and raised a family. Having experienced the loss of freedom, my father instilled in me a deep love for this country, and our liberties.

Eight years ago, I became a dad myself and experienced firsthand the depth of a father's love. My daughters, Caroline and Catherine, are the joys of my life. I spend each and every day fighting to ensure my girls inherit the same blessed land of liberty and opportunity that my father fled to nearly 60 years ago.

To all of the fathers out there, thank you for the guidance, the love, and the compassion you share with your children,

TC Sig
Ted Cruz
