Cruz News: March 11, 2018

March 11, 2018

Greetings,

On Tuesday, I was proud to join my colleague Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) in reintroducing the Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act. We continue to witness horrific shootings across the country, including in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and Parkland, Florida. This bill seeks to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future by significantly increasing funding for school safety, creating a federal task force to prosecute the criminals who attempt to illegally obtain a firearm, and directing the Department of Justice to make sure that all federal agencies are reporting convictions to the National Background Check Database. Following the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook in 2013, this bill received the support of a bipartisan majority of the Senate, and I would urge my colleagues to support the bill again, so that we can focus on targeting violent criminals, rather than law-abiding citizens.

Texas is home to nearly 100,000 refinery workers - the backbone of our state’s economy and our national security. On Wednesday, I was pleased to participate in a roundtable discussion with members of the United Steelworkers, where we discussed the threat their industry faces from skyrocketing RINs. I am encouraged by the progress we’re making to fix the broken RINs system, and am convinced there is a win-win solution that benefits corn farmers in Texas and Iowa, by giving them the ability to sell more corn, and refinery workers, by protecting their blue collar jobs in Texas and across our nation.

When Hurricane Harvey barreled into Texas and parked over my hometown, we saw historic flooding, which resulted in tragic loss of life. Texans jumped into their bass boats to cross flooded roadways and save their neighbors and their fellow Texans. I am glad that this week the City of Houston was awarded a grant from the Department of Transportation, for which I personally advocated, to implement an advanced roadway flood warning system in and around the city. This project will enhance public safety and protect Houstonians and other drivers using these roadways in the event of future flooding.

My Senate office continues to work to ensure swift and effective service to Texans and Texas communities in need of federal assistance following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. If you need additional information or assistance during the recovery and rebuilding process, please do not hesitate to contact my office or utilize the federal and state resources listed here.
