November 18, 2017
Greetings,
This week, the Senate passed the final version of the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which is now headed to President Trump’s desk. I was proud to support this legislation, which provides numerous military necessities, including over $479 million in military construction funds to the state of Texas for 2018. I sponsored or cosponsored 21 amendments that were adopted into the bill, benefitting both Texas and our military interests abroad and in space. Providing for the defense of our nation is Congress’ most important responsibility, and the passage of the NDAA will support Texas military installations and the servicemen and women based in the Lone Star State.
I was also pleased to see the Senate incorporate one of my top priorities, repealing Obamacare’s individual mandate, in our tax reform bill, which if passed will provide significant financial relief to Texas families. Repealing the unconstitutional and costly individual mandate to buy health insurance is something I have been fighting for and urging my colleagues to do for the past several months. While this is only a first step in undoing the disaster that is Obamacare, it is a critical step in the right direction.
On Wednesday I had the honor of introducing Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett and former Texas Solicitor General Jim Ho to fill the vacancies in the state of Texas on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Both are strong defenders of the Constitution who will make extraordinary appellate judges.
I also want to take this opportunity to remind those affected by Hurricane Harvey that the final day to apply for FEMA’s individual disaster assistance is November 30th; you can register at disasterassistance.gov.
My Senate office, led by our Hurricane Harvey recovery working group, continues to work to ensure swift and effective service to Texans and Texas communities in need of federal assistance following the storm. If you need additional information or assistance during the recovery and rebuilding process, please do not hesitate to contact my office or utilize the federal and state resources listed here.
Please read below for an update from this last week.
