October 14, 2017
Greetings,
This week I traveled along the Texas Gulf Coast, where I visited with communities and industry leaders affected by Hurricane Harvey, assisted with volunteer efforts, and received briefings from local officials on storm recovery. From Rockport to Beaumont, Texans are standing united as we rebuild.
During my travels, I participated in a Q&A at the Greater Houston Partnership State of the Senate, where I discussed my priorities for Harvey recovery as well as tax reform and other issues of great importance to our state. I also visited with farmers and ranchers in South Texas and saw firsthand the negative effects of Harvey on Texas agriculture. I also hosted a Facebook Live Q&A with FEMA and U.S. Small Business Administration officials, to discuss various resources available to Texans and take questions from constituents. During our discussion, we reminded Texans seeking assistance and reimbursements of upcoming deadlines.
For those Texans seeking individual assistance from FEMA, their deadline to register with FEMA is October 24, 2017. For those government jurisdictions and private nonprofits seeking reimbursements for public infrastructure repair, their deadline to submit a request to Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) is October 31, 2017. For more information, visit DisasterAssistance.gov.
I also discussed the provisions included in the Cruz-Cornyn-Rubio tax relief bill, which was signed into law just a couple weeks ago, and provides significant tax relief for those who were directly affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. By providing additional tax deductions and waived penalties for withdrawals from tax-advantaged accounts, Texas storm survivors are to keep more of their money as they rebuild. There are also tax credits available for the hundreds of small businesses that kept paying their employees, even if those employees were unable to come to work or the business was shut down, during the storms. Additionally, by lifting the usual limits on charitable giving, this bill allows more people nationwide to help Texans impacted by Harvey.
My Senate office, led by our Hurricane Harvey recovery working group, continues to work to ensure swift and effective service to Texans and Texas communities in need of federal assistance following the storm. If you need additional information or assistance during the recovery and rebuilding process, please do not hesitate to contact my office or utilize the federal and state resources listed here.
Please read below for an update from this last week.
Keep Texas Strong,
