Greetings,
This week, I participated in a tax reform debate on CNN with Sen. Bernie Sanders. There, I reminded viewers of the work we are doing in the Senate to provide significant tax relief to jumpstart the American economy and create millions of new good-paying jobs.
In fact, on Thursday, we took a crucial first step in our effort to deliver on that promise by passing the Senate’s budget resolution, and while I wish the tax cuts had been bigger and bolder, I look forward to working with my colleagues to deliver meaningful tax relief to American workers, employers, and families.
This week, Rep. Ratcliffe and I wrote an op-ed for the Dallas Morning News, where we addressed our efforts to modernize the VA’s IT infrastructure. This bill is a critical step to improving the agency's delivery of health care and remedying the long wait times that have compromised the health and safety of veterans who have honorably served our nation. Veterans in Texas and across the country deserve the best care we can give them, and passage of this bill would bring us one step closer to achieving just that.
America is standing with Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. On Friday, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson allocated an additional $57.8 million recovery funds, to assist with hurricane damaged housing along the Texas Gulf Coast. These resources, paired with the Cruz-Cornyn-Rubio Tax Relief bill, which offers significant tax relief for those affected by the storm, are critical to Texas’ recovery, and I am grateful that Congress and the administration are working together to ensure Texans have the resources to rebuild even stronger.
My Senate office, led by our Hurricane Harvey recovery working group, continues to work to ensure swift and effective service to Texans and Texas communities in need of federal assistance following the storm. Please be aware that the deadline to apply for FEMA’s disaster assistance, at disasterassistance.gov, has been extended to November 24. If you need additional information or assistance during the recovery and rebuilding process, please do not hesitate to contact my office or utilize the federal and state resources listed here.
Please read below for an update from this last week.
