Tuesday marked the seventeenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our great country. This week, as we paused to honor the memory of the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost that day, we also reaffirmed our commitment to defend America from radical Islamic terrorism. Though our freedoms and very way of life came under attack, Americans’ courage and strength have not faltered. May we never forget those lost, and the service of our brave men and women in uniform who continue to fight day and night to keep our nation free and secure.

I had the pleasure of participating in a Q&A with members of the American Petroleum Institute in Houston. We are in the midst of an energy renaissance in America, confirmed by the news this week that the United States is now the largest global crude oil producer. In the six years I have served in the Senate, I have endeavored to be the leading champion for oil, gas, and Texas energy. The reason for that is simple: my number one priority is jobs, because that’s the number one priority of Texans. Here in Texas, we know that lower taxes and fewer federal regulations allow small businesses to prosper, and opportunity to thrive. This week, I penned an op-ed for the Dallas Morning News with Sempra Energy CEO Jeffrey Martin outlining how the Port Arthur LNG project will bring economic prosperity to the Texas Gulf Coast, which continues to make progress rebuilding from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

After an advisory group recommended to the Texas Board of Education that it remove the words “all the heroic defenders” from the state’s social studies curriculum when describing the men who gave their lives at the Alamo, I authored an op-ed urging the board to preserve the legacy of the Alamo’s defenders. For generations, Texans have shared a tradition of pride and gratitude for the brave men who fought and died for Texas’ independence at the Alamo. We should be able to teach history to our children with a sense of character and valor. The classroom is not supposed to be a place without values, but must instead be a place with the right values. I am hopeful the board will agree.

On Thursday, I had the honor of welcoming World War II, Korea, and Vietnam Veterans from Amarillo who traveled to Washington, D.C. for the Texas Panhandle Honor Flight. At the World War II memorial, I thanked each of them for their service and bravery. By standing up and confronting evil, our veterans have transformed the world.

I am grateful for our brave Texas law enforcement and first responders who are answering the call to help save the lives of their fellow Americans in North and South Carolina as Hurricane Florence makes landfall. The entire State of Texas is praying for their safety. This weekend, as a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico makes its way toward Texas, South Central Texas could face yet again heavy rains and potential flooding. I urge all Texans to heed warnings from local officials, to be cautious on the roads and avoid low areas. As the Lone Star State continues to rebuild from the unprecedented devastation from Hurricane Harvey and the south Texas flooding, we must also take all steps necessary to prepare our homes and families for any future weather event.
