WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) today released the latest weekly “Freedom Minute” segment, in which he notes a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that prevents states from ensuring those who attempt to register to vote are actually U.S. citizens and his proposed legislation to fix that loophole and protect the integrity of our elections.

“UPHOLDING THE INTEGRITY OF OUR ELECTIONS” RADIO SCRIPT [60 SECONDS]:

Hi, I’m Ted Cruz, and this is the Freedom Minute.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that the federal “Motor Voter Law” -- the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 – preempted Arizona’s commonsense requirement that a person must present evidence of citizenship before being allowed to register to vote.

Unfortunately, this ruling only encourages voter fraud and undermines efforts to ensure that elections are fair and accurately reflect the will of U.S. citizens.

In response, I have proposed a bill in the U.S. Senate to close the federal loophole and to allow states to ensure that those registered to vote are actually citizens.

The right to vote is a fundamental building block of our democratic process, and it’s critical that we uphold the integrity of our elections.

I’m Ted Cruz, and this is the Freedom Minute.
