Sen. Cruz Rebukes President Obama's Plan to Circumvent Congress to End Nuclear Testing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today released a statement pushing back against President Obama’s decision to end nuclear testing with a United Nations Security Council resolution, rather than seeking ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) with the Senate.

“President Obama needs to remember that Senate ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty is not a mere formality that he can bypass at his convenience,” Sen. Cruz said. “It is required by the Constitution that he swore to uphold and protect.

“It is not surprising that the Obama administration’s progressive, globalist foreign policy finds a more favorable audience at the United Nations than it does at the United States Congress. Ten successive Congresses have opted not to ratify the CTBT because representatives elected by the American people have judged it imprudent to place our nation's security under the jurisdiction of an international organization. If the President disagrees his responsibility is to make his case to the Senate, not to attempt an end run around the Constitution at the UN.”
