Sen. Cruz Introduces Resolution to Honor the Memory of Liu Xiaobo and Victims of Communism

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) introduced a resolution to honor the memory of Dr. Liu Xiaobo as well as other victims of communism by commemorating the month of July as the ‘Liu Xiaobo Victims of Communism Month.’  Sen. Cruz has introduced legislation condemning Communist China and pushed to liberate freedom fighters, such as Dr. Liu Xiaobo and his wife Liu Xia, from the Chinese government.

“Dr. Liu Xiaobo dedicated his life to fighting for freedom in Communist China and paid the ultimate sacrifice of his personal well-being as a true commitment to his cause,” Sen. Cruz said. “By designating July as the ‘Liu Xiaobo Victims of Communism Month,’ we honor the memory of Dr. Liu and all other the lives we have lost as a result of communism, and we carry forward the message of hope and freedom for those suffering in Communist China. The legacy of Dr. Liu will go on and his message will shine a light through the darkness, to foster hope for all the freedom-loving people of China.”

Sen. Cruz has long advocated for the release of Liu Xia and her late husband, Liu Xiaobo. In addition to introducing a bill calling for Liu Xia's freedom, Sen. Cruz introduced a companion resolution with Rep. Mark Meadows honoring the life and work of Liu Xiaobo. Sen. Cruz delivered speeches on the Senate floor in July of last year, as well as September, October, and November of 2015 to call attention to Dr. Liu's plight and human rights abuses in communist China.

Sen. Cruz also led the fight to free Liu Xiaobo, author of “Charter 08”, introducing a bill to rename the street in front of the Chinese embassy in Washington "Liu Xiaobo Plaza."Welcome to EditPad.org - your online plain text editor.
