Sens. Cruz, Risch, and Colleagues Meet with Venezuelan Opposition Leaders
‘I’m very pleased to welcome Ambassador Vecchio and the delegation from the only legitimate government in Venezuela’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, today joined Sens. James Risch (R-Idaho), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) in meeting with new diplomatic representatives appointed by the Venezuelan opposition. There, Sen. Cruz expressed his support to Chargé d'Affaires of Venezuela to the United States, Carlos Vecchio, Ambassador of Venezuela to the Lima Group, Julio Borges, and Special Representative of Venezuela to the OAS, Gustavo Tarre, for their efforts to promote democracy and freedom against the Maduro regime in Venezuela.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Ambassador Vecchio and the delegation from the only legitimate government in Venezuela,” Sen. Cruz said. “The American people stand with the people of Venezuela. Maduro is a dictator desperately clinging to power and oppressing the people of Venezuela. We have seen poverty, starvation, misery, suffering, torture, and murder. And Maduro has no legal authority -- no constitutional authority.
“The United States of America -- Congress is united on this in a bipartisan manner. The president is united, the international community is united. And for the Army generals of Venezuela, each one of them has a choice to make right now, whether he or she will stand with a dictator and an oppressor on his way out illegitimately persecuting the people of Venezuela, or whether those military leaders will respect the constitution of the nation and the people of Venezuela. And the American people stand shoulder to shoulder, and side by side the people of Venezuela.”
