Sen. Cruz Calls Out Democrats for Once Again Blocking Coronavirus Relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued the following statement after Senate Democrats once again put their political interests ahead of the needs of the American people by blocking a targeted legislative package to help workers, families, small businesses and schools affected by the coronavirus pandemic:

“By refusing to move forward without even a penny in assistance before Election Day, Democrats have made it clear yet again that they are putting their political interests ahead of the interests of hard-working Americans. Yesterday, Senate Democrats halted efforts to expand the Paycheck Protection Program, blocking legislation that would have helped more small businesses struggling to keep their doors open and neglecting the very backbone of our economy.

“Today we saw more of the same as Democrats continue to demand trillions of dollars in government spending tailored to their liberal agenda while refusing to support relief targeted for those Americans who need it the most. It is unfortunate that Democrats are intent on maximizing economic pain at a time when Americans desperately need a recovery plan.

“Now more than ever we need to focus on meaningful solutions that will help our small business owners bring their employees back to work, help students whose educations have been impacted by the pandemic have school choice, and help provide real recovery for both our economy and our country. On behalf of Texans and all Americans, I’m working to do just that.”

Background:

The targeted legislative package includes several proposals championed by Sen. Cruz to expand school choice, including:

  • Sen. Cruz’s proposal to establish education tax credits.
  • Sen. Cruz’s proposal to expand 529 savings accounts.
  • Sens. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Cruz’s proposal to authorize one-time emergency appropriations funding for scholarship-granting organizations (SGOs) in each state for the remainder of the year.

Last month, Sen. Cruz introduced the Reinvigorating the Economy, Creating Opportunity for every Vocation, Employer, Retiree & Youth (RECOVERY) Act, comprehensive legislation that would help small businesses re-hire their employees and create jobs, help kids get back to school safely, allow Americans to catch-up on their retirement savings, and help find cures for COVID-19 while increasing testing.
