Cruz, Cornyn Statements on Biden Nominee to Serve as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) released the following statements about President Joe Biden’s nominee to serve as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas.
Sen. Cruz said:
“I was proud to work with John Cornyn and our bipartisan Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee to recommend Damien Diggs to serve as a U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas. Damien presently serves as an Assistant United States Attorney and is the Project Safe Neighborhoods Coordinator for his office, teaming with state and local authorities to target the ‘worst of the worst’ violent offenders in our Texas communities and bring them to justice. Once confirmed, Damien will be the first African-American U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District, a significant milestone given that James Byrd, Jr. was murdered in the Eastern District in 1998 after being dragged to death, and that remnants of the Ku Klux Klan operated in the area as recently as the 1990’s.
“Damien is a skilled prosecutor and community leader, and his nomination sends a strong, positive message of how far we have come as a nation. I look forward to his swift confirmation.”
Sen. Cornyn said:
“Damien Diggs is a veteran federal prosecutor with experience handling a broad range of cases, and I’m confident he will be a successful U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas. I was proud to recommend Damien for this position with Sen. Cruz, and I look forward to seeing him ensure the government is well-represented in Texas courtrooms.”
Sens. Cruz and Cornyn recommended four candidates to serve as U.S. attorneys in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas. Previously, President Biden nominated their recommended candidates for the other three districts. With today’s announcement, the Biden White House will have nominated each of the four candidates selected by Sens. Cruz and Cornyn. Read Sen. Cruz’s statement about those nominees here.
