Cruz, Warren Introduce Bipartisan Resolution Honoring Military Retirees
Resolution recognizes the approximately two million military retirees in the U.S.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today introduced a bipartisan resolution designating April 18, 2018 as “Military Retiree Appreciation Day” to commemorate the life-long service of military retirees. The resolution encourages Americans to honor the past and continued service of the approximately 2 million retired service members across the United States.
“The selfless sacrifice of our servicemen and women, and their families, has secured America’s place in the world as a beacon of freedom,” Sen. Cruz said. “We owe our retired Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen a debt we can never fully repay. Their service over the course of decades in uniform, coupled with their ongoing contributions to our communities, is extraordinary. In recognition and gratitude for their lifetime of service, I’m glad to join with Sen. Warren to set aside this day in honor of our retired servicemen and women.”
“All three of my brothers served in the military, and they taught me about the importance of honoring our promises to our veterans and service members,” said Senator Warren. “As a senator from Massachusetts, I am deeply proud of the men and women in uniform who sacrifice for our Commonwealth and for our nation every day, including those who continue their service as dedicated volunteers in their local communities. I am pleased to work with Senator Cruz on this bipartisan resolution to pay tribute to the continued dedicated service of our retired service members.”
“The American Military Retirees Association thanks Senators Warren and Cruz for their bi-partisan support of all military retirees. Their collaborative leadership illustrates the high regard in which our nation places the contributions of military retirees,” said Margaret Bergeron, American Military Retirees Association (AMRA). “We are hopeful that their positive example will serve as a beacon lighting the way for others to follow, and in this instance, will conclude with the passage of legislation designating April 18th, 2018 as "Military Retiree Appreciation Day.”
In addition to AMRA, this resolution was endorsed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).
