ICYMI: Sen. Cruz: The EL CHAPO Act Will Ensure Our Border is Secure

Discusses his efforts to fulfill the promises made to the American people and secure our Southern border with Fox & Friends

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) appeared on Fox and Friends to discuss the EL CHAPO Act – legislation he introduced yesterday that would reserve any amounts forfeited to the U.S. Government as a result of the criminal prosecution of “El Chapo” (formally named Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Lorea) and other drug lords for border security assets and the completion of the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Several news outlets have taken note of Sen. Cruz’s latest effort to fulfill the promises Congress made the American people.

“The Democrats are threatening government shutdown because they are so opposed to finally securing our border,” Sen. Cruz said. “So I have been trying to think about 'how can we get this done?' So yesterday I filed the EL CHAPO Act that provides that if El Chapo, the famed Mexican drug lord, is convicted, that his criminal assets go directly to building a wall and to securing the border and keeping our country safe.”

Axios: Ted Cruz introduces "EL CHAPO Act" to pay for the wall

“Senator Ted Cruz wants to use assets seized from drug lords such as El Chapo, the Mexican kingpin who was recently extradited to the U.S., to pay for border security and the border wall. The idea: U.S. prosecutors are seeking $14 billion in drug profits and other assets from El Chapo. They also routinely seize the assets of other drug dealers and traffickers.”

KVUE: Sen. Cruz introduces ‘El Chapo' Act
“Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Tuesday introduced a bill that would reserve money forfeited during prosecution of drug lords for border security. The Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order (EL CHAPO) Act would recover more than $14 billion in drug money from Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman as he faces prosecution in the United States. A release on Cruz’s website states the money would also go toward the completion of the wall along the U.S./Mexico border, which has an estimated price tag of $21 billion.”

The Washington Examiner: Ted Cruz: Take El Chapo's $14 billion to pay for the wall
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, wants the billions of dollars confiscated from an infamous Mexican drug lord to finance the construction of a wall on the Mexican-American border. ‘Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way toward building a wall that will keep Americans safe and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals across our southern border,’ Cruz said Tuesday in a statement unveiling the El Chapo Act, named after the drug kingpin who was extradited to the United States in January. Cruz's bill, if implemented as conceived, would provide the $14 billion subject to confiscation from El Chapo as well as money taken from drug lords arrested in future cases.”

Independent Journal Review: Ted Cruz Wants to Build a Wall and El Chapo Is Going to Pay for It
“With Washington, D.C., at odds over funding for President Donald Trump's proposed border wall, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has a unique proposal to solve the issue. According to a release from Sen. Cruz's office, the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order Act (EL CHAPO Act) would use assets seized from drug lords to help fund the proposed wall.”

The Daily Wire: Ted Cruz Has A Brilliant Idea For Funding Trump's Border Wall: Make Drug Lords Pay For It
“El Chapo’s arrest and detainment inspired Cruz to get creative and carry out justice on behalf of the American people. What better way to fund the border wall than to exploit the assets of those who make deadly profits off an open border? ‘Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way toward building a wall that will keep Americans safe and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals across our southern border,’ said Cruz. […] Regardless of how far it gets in the process, if poetic justice is the measure, this bill is a brilliant piece of legislation.”

Conservative Review: Ted Cruz: Make El Chapo fund the US-Mexico wall!
"Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has introduced legislation to make an infamous Mexican criminal pay for part of the wall on the southern border. And it’s a really good idea. The Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order Act, or 'EL CHAPO Act,' will reserve “any amounts forfeited to the United States Government as a result of the criminal prosecution of Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera (commonly known as ‘El Chapo’) for the completion of the wall along the Southern border.”

Breitbart: Ted Cruz Calls for $14 Billion Seized from ‘El Chapo’ to Fund Border Wall
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) introduced a bill calling for the use of $14 billion seized from cartel drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman to be used to pay for the President’s border wall between the U.S. and Mexico. ‘Fourteen billion dollars will go a long way toward building a wall that will keep Americans safe and hinder the illegal flow of drugs, weapons, and individuals across our southern border,’ Senator Cruz stated, according to a statement obtained by Breitbart Texas from the senator’s office. ‘Ensuring the safety and security of Texans is one of my top priorities.’ The Texas senator said that leveraging criminally forfeited assets from El Chapo and other Mexican cartel members and drug dealers can “offset the wall’s cost and make meaningful progress toward achieving President Trump’s stated border security objectives.”
