Press Coverage of Sen. Cruz’s Foreign Policy Speech at AEI

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, delivered remarks and participated in a Q&A on Wednesday at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). There, he laid out his foreign policy priorities to strengthen U.S. national security interests, describing his position as a “non-interventionist hawk.”

Several media outlets covered Sen. Cruz’s speech. Selected news coverage is below:

Daily Wire: Ted Cruz’s ‘Non-Interventionist Hawk’ Foreign Policy Is Exactly Right
“Since joining the U.S. Senate in 2013, Cruz's foreign policy has consistently been in the wide chasm between Ron Paul-style isolationism and Dick Cheney-style moralistic interventionism. Cruz has been blisteringly hawkish on true national security threats to the United States and our core allies — his stances on the Shiite supremacist Iranian terror regime mullocracry and the Sunni supremacist Islamism of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas alike both come to mind — but as a doctrinal rule, he has generally been warier of the risk of prolonged military deployments.”

Washington Free Beacon: Cruz: U.S. Must Ensure ‘Military Force to Destroy’ Iran Nuclear Program
“Touching on the Iranian threat, North Korean nuclear program, and strife across the Middle East, Cruz was clear in his declaration that if Iran ever crosses the nuclear threshold, America must be prepared with a crushing military response. ‘If we ever discover the Ayatollah is on the verge of getting nuclear weapons, and I believe his ambitions will continue to be doing just that, we should be prepared to use crushing military force to make sure that doesn't happen,’ Cruz said.”

Red State: GOP Seeks Its Soul On Foreign Policy; Sen. Ted Cruz May Have Found It
“Cruz calls his himself a ‘non-interventionist hawk,’ or essentially someone who believes that the best way to deter having to intervene is by letting allies, problematic allies, and foes alike know that if the U.S. makes the decision to intervene it will be with ferocity, but that we won’t attempt to bomb nations into Democracy. And while that sounds like a middle ground between interventionism and isolationism, Cruz himself says it isn’t.”

Daily Caller: Ted Cruz Explains Why Interventionists And Isolationists Are Both Wrong
“Cruz explained that throughout the last few decades, American policy has been ‘a tug-of-war between intervention and isolation.’ Most recently, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks paved the way for interventionist policies to surge to the forefront. However, the many implementation failures and disastrous missteps associated with such policies have springboarded a resurgence of isolationism.”
