Sen. Cruz: Americans Want to See Common Sense Border Security and Are Not Happy With the Schumer Shutdown
Discusses state of government shutdown, EL CHAPO Act, and term limits amendment with WOAI’s Joe Pags and KTRH’s Michael Berry
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) appeared on WOAI’s Joe Pags Show and KTRH’s Michael Berry Show to discuss the government shutdown, his efforts to secure the border with the reintroduction of the EL CHAPO Act, and his constitutional amendment mandating term limits on members of Congress.
On the Joe Pags Show, Sen. Cruz discussed his EL CHAPO Act, which he recently reintroduced. This bill would offset the costs of securing the border by reserving any amounts criminally forfeited to the U.S. government as a result of the prosecution of El Chapo and other drug lords for border security assets and the completion of the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“We should take all of the money criminally forfeited from El Chapo and from any other drug lords and use that money to secure the border,” Sen. Cruz said. “They’re making those billions crossing the border illegally, we ought to use their ill-gotten gains to stop drug trafficking and stop human trafficking at the same time.”
When asked about the state of the shutdown by Berry, Sen. Cruz said, “We have got to secure the border. Despite Schumer’s older speeches, Democrats are digging in with everything they’ve got to prevent building a wall and prevent securing the border. And that’s because the sad reality is that Washington Democrats have decided illegal immigration is good for them politically. I think the vast majority of Texans, the vast majority of Americans disagree with that. They want to see common sense border security, and are not happy with the Schumer shutdown where Democrats have gone so far as partially shut the government down to stop securing the border.”
Sen. Cruz also discussed his amendment to the U.S. Constitution to impose term limits on members of Congress.
“I’ve introduced a constitutional amendment to mandate term limits for members of Congress,” Sen. Cruz said to Pags. “It would be a maximum of three terms for a member of the House and two terms for a member of the Senate, which would mean at the end of that, you’re done, and you’re out. And I got to say, before I was in the Senate I supported term limits. But having been here now for one term, I’ve seen firsthand, I support them a thousand times more because I think very few things could have a bigger impact on draining the swamp than getting rid of the career politicians who spend their lifetime entrenching powers. Going back to citizen legislators, which is what the framers supported, where people would come spend a time serving and go back and work for a living.”
Sen. Cruz continued, noting the vast majority of Americans support term limits.
“Term limits is an idea that has overwhelming bipartisan support,” Sen. Cruz said. “It’s supported by massive super majorities of Republicans, but also Independents and Democrats. The one group that doesn’t support it is the career politicians in Washington. And so I’m going to keep fighting until we get it done.”
