Sen. Cruz: ‘Brunei’s Sharia Penal Code Is Inhumane and Immoral, and This Vote Is an Important Statement That the Senate Is United Against These Human Rights Violations’

Bipartisan Brunei resolution passes Senate Foreign Relations Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday passed a resolution cosponsored by U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) condemning and calling for the repeal of Brunei’s Sharia Penal Code, which contains provisions imposing the death penalty for homosexuality and extra-marital sex. Following the committee’s vote, Sen. Cruz issued a statement applauding the bipartisan support for the resolution:

“I applaud the passage of this bipartisan resolution in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee condemning Brunei’s human rights backsliding,” Sen. Cruz said. “Brunei’s Sharia penal code is inhumane and immoral, and this vote is an important statement that the Senate is united against these human rights violations. This resolution not only condemns these violations, but calls for restrictions that will hold the people committing them accountable, including by denying and withdrawing U.S. visas. I intend to work with my colleagues and the administration to pursue these and other measures.”
