Sen. Cruz: ‘We Need to Finish the Job on Obamacare, Not Prop It up With a Broken System’
Introduces amendment to stop District of Columbia’s individual mandate
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced an amendment to the minibus appropriations bill to maintain the right of individuals to make their own healthcare choices and stop federal funds from being used to reimplement Obamacare’s individual health insurance mandate in D.C. Congress repealed Obamacare’s individual mandate through the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act last year. In June 2018, D.C. quietly reimposed the individual mandate, penalizing those who either decide not to purchase or are unable to afford D.C.-mandated plans.
“Under Obamacare, millions of Americans have lost their doctors, seen their premiums skyrocket, and have been forced into part time work,” Sen. Cruz said. “Those Americans living in our nation’s capital have not been exempt from those hardships. Last year, we took an important first step in alleviating the damage of Obamacare by repealing the unconstitutional individual mandate. Congress must work together to ensure consumers have the freedom to choose among more affordable plans that are tailored for their individual healthcare needs. We need to finish the job on Obamacare, not prop it up with a broken system.”
