Sen. Cruz Commends Sanctions Against Nicolas Maduro

‘I will continue to work to safeguard Venezuela’s democracy, the economic prosperity of its people, and its eventual path beyond Maduro’s regime to again be a good friend and partner to the United States’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today released a statement in support of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control’s (OFAC) decision to enact sanctions against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro:

“In the face of international condemnation, Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro’s embrace of fraudulent election results and suppression of basic human rights undermines any remaining legitimacy of his authoritarian Chavista regime. Maduro’s electoral commission lied about election turnout and downplayed the overwhelming number of government employees who were pressured to participate. To add insult to injury, Maduro has called on the newly-elected sham Constituent Assembly to occupy the same premises as the duly elected National Assembly, and pressured the Venezuelan opposition to meekly accept his full-throated assault on Venezuela’s Constitution, its democratic values, and the rule of law.

“I commend the Treasury Department for expanding its sanctions to specifically include President Maduro. A man who wantonly blocks humanitarian aid to his starving people, systematically dismantles the political institutions of a previously prosperous nation, and has the blood of many dozens of Venezuelans on his hands should be held accountable. I will continue to work hard in the Senate to help safeguard Venezuela’s democracy, the economic prosperity of its people, and its eventual path beyond Maduro’s regime to again be a good friend and partner to the United States.”
