Sen. Cruz Issues Statement in Celebration of Juneteenth

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today issued the following statement in recognition of the 157th anniversary of Major General Gordon Granger’s arrival in Galveston, Texas to announce the freedom of those who were enslaved, known as Juneteenth.

“Today, all across Texas and the United States, Americans are blessed to celebrate Juneteenth and the freedom we are all afforded as citizens of this great nation.

“As we reflect on the sobering circumstances that led to the necessity of such an event, let this holiday serve as a reminder that as Americans, we must staunchly defend freedom and independence.

“May we come together to observe this long overdue emancipation with gratitude for a country that fulfilled its promise to protect the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans.”
