Sen. Cruz Urges Republicans to Stand Together and Fight for the American People

Implores Republican leadership to honor their commitments to defund Planned Parenthood and Obama’s Iran nuclear deal

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today released the following statement upon the Senate’s passage of a short-term continuing resolution maintaining the use of taxpayer dollars to fund Planned Parenthood and the President’s disastrous nuclear deal with Iran:

“Today was a win for the Washington Cartel, and another setback for the American people.  Republican leadership chose to abandon its constitutional power of the purse and to fund 100 percent of President Obama’s failed agenda.  This was a mistake, and it’s why people are so frustrated with Washington.

With Speaker Boehner’s resignation, we have a real opportunity for new leadership in Washington -- leadership that actually leads. I encourage leaders in both Houses of Congress to actually honor the commitments we have made to the American people.

We should not be giving taxpayer funds to Planned Parenthood -- a private organization, not part of the government, and under multiple investigations after being filmed apparently committing an ongoing pattern of felonies.  The federal government should not be financing the illegal sale of body parts of unborn children, en masse, for profit.

And we should be using our constitutional authority to stop implementation of this catastrophic Iranian nuclear deal. Sending over $100 billion to the Ayatollah Khamenei, who chants “death to America,” is a profound threat to the safety and security of every American.

The funding bill the Senate passed today will expire on December 11.  Rather than replay this game again in three months -- press right up to the cliff and then have Republican leadership surrender across the board -- I urge every Republican to stand together and simply do what we said we would do.”
