Sens. Cruz, Cornyn, Cassidy, Kennedy Introduce Resolution Recognizing the First Anniversary of Hurricane Harvey
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), and John Kennedy (R-La.) today introduced a resolution recognizing the first anniversary of Hurricane Harvey’s landfall on August 25, 2017.
“This week marks the first anniversary since Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on our shores,” Sen. Cruz said. “While our Texas and Louisiana communities were heavily hit, the entire Gulf Coast stood united. Countless members of local law enforcement, first responders, and private citizens, including the men and women of the Cajun Navy boldly answered the call, rescuing those in harm’s way from the floodwaters. And in the weeks and months that followed, federal, state, and local partners came together and continue to support disaster survivors in the rebuilding process. This resolution ensures we never forget the courage and dedication demonstrated during the Gulf Coast’s time of need. I remain committed to standing with the people of Texas and Louisiana as we rebuild our communities.”
“This Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey making landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast. For people who don't live on the Gulf Coast of Texas, who didn't see the shelters firsthand as I did with my friend and colleague Senator Cruz at the NRG Center in Houston, it's really hard to imagine what it looked and felt like,” said Sen. Cornyn. “The outpouring of Texans helping their neighbors over and over again reminded me of a saying I heard years ago at another natural disaster, is that being a Texan doesn't describe where you're from, it describes who your family is. I pledge my efforts to work to ensure our state remains protected and appreciate the work and support of all of our colleagues as we've met this terrible disaster with an appropriate federal response.”
“As the flood waters rose, communities and strangers bound together and took action to help those in trouble. A year has passed, but we have not forgotten the many families that are still recovering,” said Dr. Cassidy. “We will continue to make sure those affected have the resources they need to rebuild, recover and prosper.”
“In Louisiana, we are no stranger to the devastating effects of hurricanes,” said Sen. Kennedy. “Hurricane Harvey made landfall one year ago, and this resolution recognizes the unfortunate one year anniversary. While the impact of Harvey was the most severe to our neighbors in Texas, many homes and businesses also flooded in southwest Louisiana. Today is a day for remembering the lives lost and commending the courage shown in responding to this monstrous storm.”
