Sens. Cruz, Paul Introduce Retirement Freedom Act

‘I urge my colleagues to take up and swiftly pass this legislation in a time when our nation’s seniors need it most’

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) this week introduced the Retirement Freedom Act, legislation empowering senior citizens with the choice to opt-out of Medicare Part A and utilize other healthcare options without being forced to lose their Social Security benefits. U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) introduced the companion bill in the House of Representatives. Sen. Cruz previously introduced this legislation in 2018 and 2019.

Upon introduction, Sen. Cruz said:

"America's seniors deserve the power of choice when it comes to their healthcare-especially as the coronavirus poses unprecedented challenges for so many. This bill empowers seniors with the freedom to choose the best healthcare option for them without fear of losing their Social Security benefits. I urge my colleagues to take up and swiftly pass this legislation in a time when our nation's seniors need it most."

Sen. Paul said:

"Our Retirement Freedom Act gives seniors the ability to act in their own best interest without bureaucrats threatening to take away their Social Security. It is a reform grounded in freedom and a respect for the American people, and it's a model for the changes we can make to strengthen our health care system moving forward."

Rep. Palmer added:

"People should not be forced to give up their private insurance because their Social Security is being held hostage. Our senior citizens deserve more control over their own medical decisions, and this bill would help give that."
