Sens. Cruz, Scott, Colleagues Introduce Resolution Condemning Religious Persecution by Nicaraguan Regime

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) introduced a resolution condemning the unjust imprisonment of individuals affiliated with Mountain Gateway, a Texas-based Christian missionary organization, by the Ortega regime inNicaragua. The regime recently targeted and arrested Mountain Gateway members. The regimehas also issued warrants for American citizens associated with the organization.

Earlier this month, Sens. Cruz and Scott sent a letter to President Biden calling on the administration to implement targeted sanctions against Nicaragua following these actions by theOrtega regime.

Upon introducing the resolution, Sen. Cruz said, “The Ortega regime is deepening its abuse of the religious freedom and human rights of Nicaraguans. Its recent imprisonment of Mountain Gateway pastors is a serious escalation, as is its further persecution of Americans. The U.S. should hold the regime and all involved accountable for these actions. I’m proud to join Sen. Scott and our colleagues in introducing this resolution.”

Sens. Cruz and Scott were joined by Sens. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) in introducing the resolution.
